Mental health has become one of the world's largest challenges of late - especially with recent global events in 2020. Isolation, unemployment and uncertainty have all shown to lead to poor mental health, and in some cases, suicide. With many countries lacking in psychologists (e.g. Indonesia has a little over 1000 clinicians for over 270 million people), and there being a global crisis, now more than ever,
we need to learn how to take care of each other.
This short booklet will equip you to do that. With practical tips, simplified concepts, and deep personal stories we hope to equip you with the practical knowledge to help those around you, from your spouse, parents, children, co-workers, team - everyone. In this booklet, We will briefly go through the different types of psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety and burnout - followed by nine practical ways you can help care for someone in difficult times while also taking care of yourself. Finally, we briefly discuss suicidality, and what to do in these situations.
DR. SANDERSAN (SANDY) ONIE
Dr. Sandersan (Sandy) Onie graduated his PhD in Psychology at UNSW Sydney. His work pertains to mental health and suicide prevention, working together with various public and government organizations in both Australia and Indonesia with a focus on communication, training, and research. His work in improving mental health in Indonesia has been covered by many outlets (inc. ABC Radio, ABC Asia Pacific, The Guardian, UNSW Newsroom) and is being studied as part of a UNSW Science Masters course on science for impact. He has recently founded the Indonesian Mental Health Mission and is also the expert adviser to I ASK.
I ASK is a campaign led by Joyce Leonora which aims to increase awareness of how each and everyone one of us can give support and care for our family and friends who are going through difficult seasons. Furthermore, it aims to bridge the gap between awareness and behaviour by providing training programs and modules for the public, such as this booklet. Website:
